With my daughter, I used a large plastic peanut butter jar for the coated rubber bands and a smaller one for the bobby pins. Barrettes went into another large plastic jar. Not a "cute" storage container, but durable and unbreakable as well as practical.
I bought a craft holder from Hobby Lobby, it has many compartments and snaps very tightly.
