Traveling to Mexico with 2 year old

Hi everyone! We are taking our first family vacation since our son was born almost 2.5 years ago and are going to my parent's time share property in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. We think we can handle the air travel part of the trip, but wondered what was recommended when renting a car in Mexico. We know we need a car seat and do they rent car seats or do we need to bring ours? We are trying to avoid bringing it because it is HUGE, but obviously will do whatever is needed to ensure his safety. Thoughts and advice are appreciated.

I have never traveled with my almost 3 year old to Mexico but even here I have always brought my own car seat to ensure safety and keep peace of mind. Besides it is very expensive to rent a car seat in the states (about $10 a day). For that amount you can purchase a smaller, cheaper seat and keep the comfy seat at home. The seat may be a pain but worth it in the end. Also airlines should stow the seat. Southwest didn't count it as a bag and it was free of charge.
