My 4 year old always stutters and mumbles when he gets really excited. He is behind in speech and had speech lessons last year in pre-k. He will be starting speech lessons again this year. However, I was just wondering if anyone had the same issues and what you did to help them get thru it. I guess I am looking for ways to slow him down when he talks so we can understand him. If we tell him to slow down, he gets upset and then he won't tell us the story. Thanks in advance.
Perhaps if you use different wording like "take a deep breath and tell me all about it" or something along that line it would help. I'm sure after hearing "slow down" a million times he is frustrated by that phrase. This speech issue is very common.
my brother used to do that and my son seems like he does it sometimes too.
one thing my dad did, and i try to do with my son, is to stop him. just tell him "stop". then tell him "think of what you want to tell me. breathe. now tell me, what do you need?" or whatever. :P
that helped my brother and it helps my son too. they are just thinking so fast and are so excited, that they cant help it!
