Severe Nausia

I'm trying to find out a little about those of you who have suffered from sever morning sickness. I had the same issues with my first, but was able to stay at home during that time. I'm a teacher now and it will be a major problem if I have to quit for 4 months while I endure this sickness. I have heard about something called sea bands. Has anyone ever used them and had any luck? Really, I'm desperate for any help you all can provide on this issue!!! Thanks.
Carol P.

Carol,

Congratulations on your pregnancy... and no need to apologize for asking a question again.

I know with my second, actupunture helped a ton!!! She hit different pressure points that stopped the sick feeling and the throwing up too! It was amazing. I saw Jeni Bui at Lockrow Chiropractic. 894-4428

I also have the sea band, it helped too!

Good Luck... I am sorry you are feeling crappy, but at least it wont last forever!

I used the sea bands during my 2nd pregnancy and they did help. I also used them on vacation for the plane and whenever I go out on a boat. My younger son tends to get carsick easily, so I always keep a pair in the car for him, too. You can usually find them at Walmart, and I've seen them sometimes at Target, too.

Other things that helped:
sour stuff - like lemon head candies
smelling lemons - keep a few around to cut open and sniff and carry it to work in a plastic bag
eat whatever it is you can get down no matter how non-nutritious it may seem - sometimes if you can get some carbs in your body to get your blood sugar back up a little, it can make it easier to eat something else. My first pregnancy I would have salt & vinegar potato chips and coke - not nutritious, but it broke the nausea cycle so I could keep something better down.

I haven't tried this, but one trick for my younger son that I've been told is to have him drink the syrup from a can of peaches. I wonder if that would work for morning sickness, too?

And I'm sure you know that not getting adequate rest can make it worse. So put your feet up every chance you can, breathe deeply, and try to relax.

Congratulations!

The sea bands didn't do much for me in my violently ill pregnancy. However acupuncture took me from vomitting multiple times daily to uneasy in the stomach on occasion. That was a drastic improvement that I was sorry I hadn't discovered 16 weeks sooner. Good luck and congrats on your pregnancy.

Becca :)

The quick and easy way...ask your OB for an anti-nausea. My morning sickness didn't hit bad until the 2nd trimester (weird I know) and she gladly prescribed me Phenergan. It has been a godsend! There are many anti-nauseas available, she'll help you find the right one.

So sorry for you! I've never had any morning sickness, but I have a friend that had it continue throughout her pregnancy. I know that she was given an anti-nausea drug by her dr. that is normally given to chemo patients. It's the only thing that would help her keep anything down. You may want to ask your doc about something like that that he can prescribe you.

B6 and 1/2 Unisom is what my midwife prescribed. I wore the Sea Bands and also tried Dramamine. Ginger tea (fresh ginger) helped too. When I got really really sick I went to the hospital and got Zofran.

Dear Carol,
I really feel for you! I am 15 weeks and I've spent the past several months in misery, and it is finally starting to subside.
I fould the following things worked well for me:
1.) Phenergen-it is an anti-nausea pill that my o.b. gave me. It usually comes in suppository (I don't recommend this method!) but the pill has worked wonders for me. I tried Zofran and that didn't even work.
2.) Popsicles! Keep them in your freezer at all times!
3.) Eat what you can when you can. It doesn't matter how wierd or what time of day. Potato chips for breakfast, ice cream for dinner, whatever. An empty stomach makes it much worse.
4.) I know with a child at home it is hard to find time to rest, but sleep when you can...it's really the only way you won't feel it.

Basically, you have to try different thing and see what works for you, but I really do suggest Phenergen. I work outside of the home and I could not get through a day without it. Please know you are not alone! I know it is sooo hard and disheartening and frustrating. If there is someone who you can talk to and vent your frustrations to, do so. It helps for your sanity.

If you need to talk, email me! At least you'll know one other person suffering along with you!

Hello, congrats! sorry it's miserable.I am always sick in 1-7 months or so the more I have learned about how to control the nausea, the better it has gotten with each pregnancy. Keep little amounts of food in your tummy at all times. Protein is especially helpful. cashews, dried bananas, regular bananas, ginger put into capsules, swallow two or three, fresh air in deep breathes, Peanuts, sunflower seeds, dry cereal like cheerios kix, saltines of course, toaste plain, NO milk, cold foods soothe, however, milk sours in your tummy. Never eat hot or warm foods when you are feeling sick. No caffeine, tastes good at the time, not good later. Drink lots of water just like in labor, the pain and nausea gets worse when you are dehydrated. Anti-nausea medicines always make me nauseous. I've never used the sea band. good luck!!

Hi Carol,

I am so sorry that you are sick. I feel your pain b/c I am about 11 weeks and very sick also. After being in and out of the ER and trying almost every medication, I have decided that Reglan works the best for me. However it will make you extremely tired. Phenergan does work well but just be aware that you may have a distonic reaction to it. I took it in the ER and I thought that I was going to jump out of my skin. It doesn't happen all the time but I thought that you should know about it. Best of luck and congrats.

These wrist bands are the greatest thing since sliced bread. I to suffered severe nausia right from the very beginning with my second child. I tried all the tricks, but nothing else seemed to work. My doctor was totally against any type of medication to see me through and wouldn't prescribe anything. The only other thing that really helped was to have a small snacks (crackers and pretzels worked for me) by my bedside so that I could slowly get up in the morning, have a small snack with a few sips of water and then I was able to move on with my day. They sell these wrist bands at Walgreen's for about $20.00, a small price to pay!!

reflexology masaging certain preasure points in the hands and feet sounds weird but it really works and is a non medical or medicine risk

my very close friend swares up and down about the syrup in the HEAVY cling peaches as the reason it coats the tummy and is very effective

and have you tried any of the electrolite drinks to replace what you are loosing propel fitness water gatorade

several tiny meals a day not just 3 big meals you still eat the same amounts just nore spread out

regular exercise i know you think i am crazy but even a short walk around the block and it will help your body heal faster after the baby is born also during labor and delivery

NO DAIRY at all

pedialite popsicles again sounds weird but you supply the baby some much needed nutrientes without the added sugars of gaterade and like propel however they are tons more expensive so it up to you and if ya do choose the gatorade or propel you have way more flavors to choose from and you can make your own popsicles from them to help with slowly help ya start feeling better soon

the BRAT diet B bananas R rice A applesauce T toast(dry toast)

very bland foods chicken boiled no spices, baked potoes (no toppings), crackers, oven baked foods againg no spices, turkey is also a good one because the blandness there are those deli meats at the store packaged or ask the butcher to slice it so it would be sandwich thickness again no seasoning
and there may be additives or presertives to maintain freshness causing the nausea so i tried with my son the health food store to get organic foods halped a lot and i was not as sick

NO RED MEAT use pork chops , chicked, turkey.... ect

i hope it helps ask the ob/gyn for more suggestions the dr may have that will help you through the day with hurting the baby or hinders you from you employment if ya want to talk more email me at [email protected]

good luck
susan

Hello there,
Sorry your feeling so bad, when I was pregnant I was very sick also. I was told by doctors and health stores to get Cranberry Capsules...Homeopathic. It's easier than drinking Cranberry juice since juice might just come back up. Go to health food store and get Cranberry Capsules so you can feel better.
Hope this helps..if in question...do your research...google it!

One Word...ZOFRAN! I was extremely ill my first pregnancy and tried everything! This was the only thing that worked for me. You just have to make sure you take it when you know you will not throw it up. It is also extremely expensive (atleast it was with my insurance plan), but well worth it. Congratulations and Best of Luck!

I was so sick when I was pregnant with my daughter that my doctor put me on Phenergan. It worked well for me. I took it in the morning and if I needed it through out the day I would take another one. I would ask your doctor and see what he can give you. Everyone is different and different things work for different people.

I also had really bad all-day nausea and sickness - I was eventually hospitalized overnight for dehydration. You can try No to morning sickness tea that helped me a lot, but if it is really bad, go to your Dr and get some medication.
