My daughter, who is almost 3, occasionally gets gas pains so bad they have her doubled over in tears for up to 1/2 hour. She eventually "works it out", but I was wondering if any of you Moms out there have any natural remedies for gas up your sleeves. For those of you who have suggested lactose intolerance, I'm sure that's not the issue. These pains are very infrequent - only twice in the past 6 months has this occurred. It's probably due to an over-indulgence of dairy before naps on occasion. It's upon waking that the pain hits. I'm not willing at this point to remove dairy from her diet.
Hi Tracey
Your daughter may be lactose intolerant. I'm not a doctor, but I know that ice cream sometimes makes me double over as well as everyone else (if you know what I mean) as opposed to frozen yogurt. You may want to ask her doctor.
Have a great week

You could try peppermint tea at these times, it tastes good and kids love it. catnip tea is also good.also anise is great for that. She is a-little young for the actual side but instead have her suck on a piece of black licorice (mess but works.) When my daughter was younger she had this problem alot and we found through trial and error that if she knelt on the floor and bent her upper body down to the floor and raise butt in the air (like a cat) having her butt raised will help to release gas. If she has gassy watery stools at the end of these episodes, talk to dr.
It sounds like you will have to start keeping close track on which foods cause this. Milk is definitely one of the biggest problems. (dairy in general) Have you read about the most common food allergies/problems? Wheat is another big one...
good luck !
You should have her tested for lactose intolerance (or just remove dairy for two weeks and see if her episodes stop). If she has been on antibiotics in the past few months, try children's acidophilus (a probiotic- healthy bacteria that strengthen immune system and aid immensly with digestion). I make a digestive aid tea for my children with equal parts crushed fennel seed, anise seed, dill seed, and some liquid ginger extract (find in the herbal tinctures in natural section or natural food store), and honey to taste. Works wonders.
My mother always gave us either one of these...
Anise,
Chamomille,
or
Hierba Luisa also called lemon tea.
They are the best at calming, and great for stomach issues including belly aches, and gas relief - specially Hierba luisa. It is hard to find, but they do have some online herbal stores that you can purchase a bag from.. here is a link I just found.
http://www.urpimaca.com/urpimarket/fever.html
I never ordered from there, but if you can find someone that has that herb, it is the best.
I grow my own plant, and it comes in handy.. I love it.
Another website that tells you more about natural remedires: http://www.mothernature.com/Library/Bookshelf/Books/15/35.cfm
As a child, I use to love these teas. I remember the calming effect they had on me, and I use them for my kids. I use to love them so much that I would drink them for bedtime, etc. They are very safe, and belive me, if you tried them too, you would like them.
Well, good luck with your baby.
God bless,
Cristina
Hi Tracey, Did you ever heard of the Dr. Brown bottles. They help with the gas for the babys. I bought them for my kids, they work great. They sell them in Walmart and Target. Hope that helps you.
my son had a similar problem, i would lie him on his back and bring his knees up to his chest and move both his legs in a circle. it helped-but he was an infant. why not try mylicon? also, see what she is eating, might be a food allergy.
Tracey - My son had similar experiences at around the same age and what I thought was simply gas was actually severe constipation. Check her stool and if it is hard, try natural laxatives. Other than that, keep a food diary of everything she is eating and try to pin point what is causing the issue - tomatoes, chocolate, mild allergies to milk, wheat etc. can all cause it. Good luck!
Tracy, my daughter also suffered from gas pains on a daily basis, try this natural tea, you can buy it at your local grocery store in the spice section it's called Aniz, boil 2 cups of water for each floret and add 1 tea spoon of sugar.Since she's 3 you can add a little more of the tea...you can also mix the tea in her favorite drink in case she doesn't like the taste, it's very soothing for moms as well... it helped me tremendously...
I don't have any natural remedies, but perhaps you can try and find out what is causing the gas. Dairy, perhaps? I would definitely talk to her doctor about it. ps - we have a daughter that is about the same age whom we too have decided will be our one and only!
Hi, my name is Rachel. I noticed your asking bout remedies for gas, one that I've used in the past was fennel tea. Real simple, but some fennel seeds boil them in water and have her drink it. It has a licorice taste to it. But, if she has gas that's this painful maybe talk to your ped. she could have other issues, like maybe lactose intolerence? Hope I helped some!
Have you tried some warm prune juice? I don't like it but had that problem after having my first son and when they warmed it, the taste wasn't so bad.
Hi Tracey,
My sister had the same issues with my nephew and found
out that he was lactose intolerant. Try cutting out
regular dairy from her diet, and giving her lactaid milk.
It could help!
Good Luck.
HI Tracey, I am a crohn's patient, so I know all about gas pain, it is so terrible!! I find that sitting in a fetal position as you rock her back and forth might help, as well as getting her to walk around to get the gas to move a little. Teach her breathing techniques to inhale through her nose and exhale through her mouth (while she is on the potty) might help. When all else fails call your dr, they might be able to give you more suggestions and you might want to try changing her diet to a lactose free diet or cut down on the number of gasy foods she eats and make sure she is not constipated!! Good Luck.

Hi, Tracy. My son, who is now 10, began with gas related stomach pains around 3 as well. We tried everything and they only became worse. After visiting 2 pediatricians with no help, someone suggested taking him off of wheat. We tried that for 2 days and what a difference, as we tended to eat healthy, using wheat bread as well. We took him to a chiropractor who also tested for food allergies. Sure enough, he has sensitivity to wheat products. Now he stays off of wheat, and has no problems. If nothing else works for you, try taking her off of wheat...just keep in mind that wheat shows up in many food products...hot dogs, condiments, gravy, bread, etc. Hope this helps.
Tracey,
Poor thing! It's terrible to see our children in pain. I have a few questions before I can give you any real advice. My husband is a Shaklee distributor and their whole purpose is finding natural solutions to health issues. If you could contact me and we can go over the details I think I can help.

I do have a natural remedy.. but it is Hispanic ingredients and I'm not quite sure what the English translation is for one of the pruducts. But basically what you want is to make a tea with "anise de estrella" (approx 2-3 of them), also a little "anise de cumino" and a pinch of oregano. If you go to any Spanish Bario they'll know exactly what it is b/c it's quite common. Works very well and is very natural. Hope that helps!
You could try boiling some anise seeds (NOT star anise)into a tea. Strain the seeds and add a little sugar or honey. It works for other kinds of upset tummies too.
tracey,
Help her work it out, by bicycling her legs and working her belly by pushing on it and roughly massaging it,
Lay her on her back and then grab both her ankles, one in each hand and her feet on your belly, both legs together
and push her knees into her belly,
at some point the "FART" will POP out.
Also telling her to sit on the POTTY helps her relax enough to PUSH OUT the FART like a POOP.
Stay away from Broccoli, onions, and nuts,
Do a YAHOO search for GASSY FOODS, and try and avoid them.
Also very helpful is OATMEAL, it helps her POOP easier, which obviously UNBLOCKS the bowels.
