Has anyone sold a car to Carmax?

I was just wondering if anyone has used Carmax & if it was a good experience? We are going to try to sell our truck to them. Do they offer really low?? I hate trying to sell to private parties. So I thought this might be a quick & easy way.
Thanks ahead of time for your replies.

Yes, it is low. They sell their cars below blue book so don't expect to get anywhere near that value. Probably about $5000 less or so depending on the value of your car.

I did several years ago (when the market was still very good) and got a fair price for my car. They appraised the car and offered me the blue book value of the car -- I expected less, actually. It was a fast and painless process. It's probably worth the time. If they like your car, they'll make you an offer and you don't have to accept it if you don't want to.

we tried to sell our car to them but they offered us $3500 so we tried selling it on our own & got $7500

We sold our Suburban to Carmax. It was so easy and such a smooth process. They gave us exactly what we owed on the car at the time, which was about $30,000. The payments were too much for us. We considered just turning it back in to the dealer, but that would have been on our credit report, so we looked into Carmax. Sure, maybe we could have gotten a little more from a private party, but we really didn't have the time to be advertising and trying to sell it, and still keeping up with the high payments. I would definitely recommend them, and I would look to them the next time I was interested in purchasing a car. No haggling, the price is the price, and they have some great vehicles to choose from.

We've purchased two cars and sold one to Carmax. Very good experience all around. No complaints.

I sold a car to carmax in Charlotte, NC in 2006 and it was a good experience. They offered me more than the dealership where I was buying my new car and it was quick and painless. They gave me above blue book value for my old beat up pontiac. I would give it a try.

Make sure the car is really clean...including the engine. We got two different prices for the same car. Also night time is a better time to sell if the car is a little older and might have some paint scraches.

You will always get less money from a trade-in than selling it to a private party. It's worth the hassle of selling it yourself in the long run.

We've done it and so have some family members. Great experience, so easy and we all felt we got good deals based on comparisons we did online. Definitely recommend...

It is sooooo easy! We took our Jeep there thinking we were gonna walk away disapointed. They offered us top end of the bluebook value even though our Jeep needed a tuneup and a deep cleaning. I was very impressed and satisfied. It only took about an hour and a half. I highly recomend it. And if they do offer low you don't have to take the offer and can just walk away. Good Luck!

I sold my previous car to Carmax. It was so easy and I feel that they offered me a fair price. I do a lot of research online before doing anything like that, and they offered me more than the dealer where I was buying my new car. Good luck!

Hi. I have not, but my parents just recently sold their car to Carmax. The transaction was done only a week ago and they both said they were very impressed with the service and the offer they were given for their car. They first tried to trade it in at a dealer for a new car.......but they definitely got a better offer for their car through Carmax. They both agreed the transaction was very easy.

we had two experiences. in both cases we had already looked up the Kelly Blue Book value.

the first, they offered me more for my old Subaru. we happily took it.

the second, they offered my hubby under for his Lexus. we didn't take that and instead traded it in at a new car dealer.

either way, it's easy. they've got the process totally streamlined. you can't lose by trying.

Hi Missy---
we sold a car to them as we bought our new (used) car from them. Yes, they gave us a relatively low price...probably about $2000-$3000 that we may have gotten through a private sale. We decided to go with it to save the hassle, which to us was worth the difference.

Hope that helps.

Yes we did. It was quick, easy and we felt it was worth the price they offered. Check it out. They will let you know what they will give you before you say yes. Doesn't cost you a dime!

Yes more than once, and it's great!! Hassle free, and they offer you way more than other car dealerships. I would definitely recommend it. Hope this helps!

Missy,

I have bought a SUV from CARMAX, sold it back to them 2 years later and then had a car shipped from Florida by them for me to purchase. We found them to be far and honest. I would recommend to anyone looking to buy or sell. The whole process was VERY EASY!

For us, it was completely painless. And let me say, even though the car was only five years old, it was worse than a 50 year old junker. I referred to it as the POS. We, too, wondered a lot and worried a little about how it would go, so we went in on a Thursday (with an appointment for a day and time they were less likely to be busy) just to find out about the process. We ended up letting them give us an estimate. It was about $500 less than we had hoped for, but was still about a grand more than we worried we'd get. Three days later we found the car we wanted to buy somewhere else, took the POS in and walked out with a check. We still owed $250 on the car, so they sent that amount to the bank and gave the rest to us. No problems with paperwork or anything else. Very smooth.

Good luck!

I have and it was very easy and painless. I work, my husband has two jobs, and we have a toddler, so we thought it would be easier than selling it ourselves. You know, the advertising, the phone calls, the appointments with people to test drive. Anyway, we did some research before hand and checked the Blue Book price, plus had a friend who is a mechanic give us an idea of what we could get. We got exactly what we would have asked for if we were doing it ourselves. We also considered using the car as a trade-in at a dealership for a new car. So, we checked out that avenue as well. The dealership offered us far less than Carmax. Hope you have as good an experience as we did. Good luck.
