How does one get rid of dandruff? I had my hair colored and the hairdresser said not to use head n shoulders that it would strip the color. Can anyone help me with this please. Not a bad case of dandruff just slightly but its noticeable cuz its a darker brown. I used to have blonde highlights and got tired of them so went a little darker.
You might try TGel or the store brand.
I doubt it will strip your color and you do not have to use it daily if I remember right.

Most dandruff is just caused by dry skin. Just switching to a better conditioner may take care of the problem. I have always used Pantene produces because they do not leave a build up in my hair. You have to do the name brand though, not the cheap Walmart immitation. If that doesn't work, try Paul Mitchell's The Conditioner. This is a salon quality product and a little more expensive but it is one of the best products out there. Paul Mitchell also has a product called Tea Tree shampoo that helps with dandruff. My dad has very coarse hair and has used this combination for years to keep his hair soft and dandruff free.
Tea Tree oil should help. Im sure you could find it at walmart or target if not then at a salon!
I love DOVE shampoo and conditioner it goes well into the hair and feels clean also the conditioner leaves my hair feeling great not over hydrated greasy or blah, however using a little less hot water will help as well I have dry itchy head when I use to hot of water.Try using a blow dryer on a warm setting not the hottest and away from the scalp
Good Morning Gale, Dandruff is caused from dry scalp. It is winter time so skin tends to be drier then other times.
You could give yourself a hot oil treatment, if you have a Sally's Beauty supply shop near by, you can get it there or even a tube of a product called Kolesterol cream. both will get to scalp and moisturize it.
Get a shampoo & conditioner with non color stripping. I use Garniers Fructis Color Shield. It never hurts to change what you use every few months. It helps remove the build up that adheres to the hair shaft.
God Bless

PS I used to be a full time stylist 2 yrs and first 3 yrs of marriage. I have kept my license current though...lol Oh my haven't worked in a salon for ahh ahh 35 yrs.
Time does fly.... LOL
Selsun Blue is a good shampoo to prevent dandruff. It must be pretty mild, as my daughter in law was told to wash my grandson's hair with it, to get rid of cradle cap.
Ok, so here is my 2 cents worth as a hairdresser. Dont use any of the dandruff shampoo on the market.(Walmart, Drug store, grocery store) Almost all will have a stripping action of some sort that will hurt your color. If you are already using a salon shampoo and conditioner...apply the conditioner directly to your scalp. Rub it in and let it sit for a little bit. Repeat this for several shampoos and you should start to see a difference. If you do not get results with this then head to a salon for a specific conditioner. You certainly dont want to ruin your beautiful color you spent good money on by taking the cheaper way out to solve the solution.
Good luck!!
Hi Gale,
As the daughter of a hairdresser, I am the guinea pig for a lot of stuff. It's true, Head & Shoulders will strip the color. There is a product by Redken. It's in an oddly shaped white bottle but it is called Scalp Relief. I have dandruff problems as well and this stuf WORKS!!! I don't use it all the time if I notice a let up in the dandruff and it's not as bad. Anyway, this stuff is amazing. I usually do 2 shampoos. the first one i just apply like normal, rinse hair, apply shampoo, rub not scrup it in, then rinse. the second time, i use rub it in and let it set for a minute or 2 and then rinse out. Then there's a conditioner that is awesome at leaving your hair feeling smooth. It is by Paul Mitchell called The Conditioner. It works amazingly! I have thick hair. I've colored mine too and because of the color your hair tangles easier too. Using The Conditioner is AWESOME!!!
I naturally have dry skin on my face. So if you do too, don't get the dry skin off your forehead by your hairline confused with dandruff. I try to wash my face, at least by the hair line before i wash my hair. That stuff just drives me nuts! Ok, i'm rambling now, but try the Redken product, Scalp Relief. If it doesn't work for you take it back to the beauty shop you bought it from. SmartCuts in Raymore, Mo guarantees they're products. If you don't like it, send it back and get your money back. they'll work with you.
I hope this helps! Have a great day!

This stuff work so well for me.
Arbonne Intelligence Daily, Self-Adjusting Shampoo with Tea Tree Oil
This super-charged blend works to help hair shine while eliminating annoying, dry scalp.
When you are in the shower put Sea Breeze (yes the astringent) on your scalp and let it sit for a few minutes, then wash your hair as normal. I woul ddo thsi 2-3 times a week until it has cleared up. Good luck.
I agree with the Tea Tree Oil....You can even just add it to your shampoo or conditioner that you are using instead of buying the shampoo with it added already. YOu can find the oil at any drug store. Good luck!
I've read that if you're low on the omega oils that you will have dry skin and dandruff. Maybe try a omega fish oil supplement and it can take a year to get things back where they should be with the defficiency of the omega's.
I've read we have a epidemic of being defficient in the omega oils.
Maybe try both the oils and the other products others have recomended :)
Adding the omega's surely won't hurt but can only help you body & mind work better.

Hello Gale,
I agree with statements below. However when you go to wash, make sure you SCRUB your scalp well. Also, make sure you RINSE well. I've got dark-brown hair and used to have a problem with dandruff as well. Now my daughter is having this same problem and I told her to do the same. When it's done right, she doesn't have problems.
Hope this helps! ls
pert plus has dandruff shampoo too and doesn't seem as rough as head and shoulders but may not be good for colored hair either but know my husband and daughter use it and prefer it over head and shoulders.
One thing that was recommended to me to do since I perm is use as little dandruff shampoo and only on the scalp, not the rest of the hair. It's a little more time consuming to shower, but it works pretty well.
When I used to get my hair colored at a salon they all told me the same thing, do not use Head and Shoulders. I spent all this money on this stuff called Nioxin (I think) to get rid of the itchy scalp I woudl get in the winter. Well, now that I've grown my hair very long and we've had to tighten our budget a little I color my own hair out of a box to cover my grey hair only, and I broke down this winter and read the Head and Shoulders bottle at the store one day, it says on the bottle that its gentle enough for colored hair, so I decided to try it b/c my head itched terribly and I figured I could just spend another $6.50 on a nothe rbox of dye if it took my color out! To my surprise it did not take my color out and I've been using it all winter. I usually have to color my grey roots about every 5 weeks and that hasn't changed since I started using head and shoulders. So, it worked for me, but I can't say I would have tried it if I had spent $50 on a color job at the salon! haha... Ask your stylist about the Nioxin stuff, it worked too.
As your doctor for a prescription for Nizoril...it's a red shampoo that you use once or twice a week inbetween your regular shampoo and it will get rid of the dandruff.
If you have color-treated hair, ask your stylist to recommend a safe product for your needs that address both your hair color as well as dandraff.
In addition, You could also as for a recommendation as Sally's Beauty Supply.
SECOND EXAMPLE:
Try T-Gel by Neutrogena. You don't have to use it as often, so it doesn't fade color. They also have a T-Sal formulation that is supposed to be completely color safe.
