Advice on physical therapy for a collapsed disc

To give you some background: I underwent a discectomy (L5-C1) in December. Since the surgery I have been dealing with lower back pain that radiates to my left buttock. Before the surgery the pain was in my lower back radiating down my right leg. At that time, the pain was so bad and I was diagnosed with cauda equina syndrome because it was affecting my ability to urinate. So, now here it is 7 months later and I am still dealing with this pain in my lower back and left buttock ~ the other pain is completely gone. This pain is getting worse, though. I went to the doctor yesterday and he did some x-rays and told me I have a collapsed disc that should have corrected on its own after the discectomy, but apparently did not. So, he has recommended physical therapy. Has anyone ever had PT for a collapsed disc? I had this pain while going through PT and my physical therapist couldn't do a lot of exercises with me that he wanted. I know they will be doing different exercises now that they know what the deal is, but I just don't want to put out all this money for co-pays (totalling over $1,000) if it's not even going to work. The next alternative would be surgery, which he told me he wants to avoid as it is "very intense." Any input would be GREATLY appreciated.

This isnt pt but my hubby has 3 ruptured discs & his chiropractor is amazed he is pain free.
