Grandma has offered to take our preschooler for a week and my husband and I are THRILLED! We are planning to take a little 3 or 4 day getaway with just us and our sweet (well-behaved!) 10 month old baby. We are really just looking to relax and unwind. We want to do the simple things that you can't do with a 3 year old around, like read and nap and sit quietly and drink wine. We don't need any nightlife other than maybe a decent restaurant or a small movie theater. We absolutely LOVE! staying in little cabins or cottages or a rental house or anywhere that we can have a lot of privacy. The most important thing to us is the quiet and the possibly the view. We live in North Fort Worth and really don't want to drive more than 2 or 3 hours to get where we're going. We're on a really tight budget, so we're looking for something around $150 per night or less, if possible.
Does anyone know of anyplace that sounds like this?? Any information or advice would be so sincerely appreciated!!
In Austin there's a nice little B&B called Carrington' Bluff Inn. There are 2 houses that make it up. The Writer's cottage has 3 bedrooms and is by far my favorite.
You rent just one of the rooms (I've stayed in the Hugh Kenner, but you don't need 2 Queen beds), and in the cottage there's a shared sitting area, breakfast area and kitchen which you can use. The fridge is stocked with wine and ice cream and you take what you want.
In the morning you walk across the street to breakfast at the big house.
There is no view, but it's very relaxing. Lady Bird Johnson's Wild Flower Center is about a 20 minute drive, downtown Austin is just a few minutes drive.
I think you might like Fredericksburg, TX in the Hill country. There are lots of quaint B&b's, also Inn's and hotels if needed. There are lots of cottages/cabins for rent also. Lots of little shops, some wineries and excellent restaurants. Look at their visitor page at
I can get you into one of our timeshares near Tyler. A GREAT get-a-way not far from home. We take weekend trips there throughout the year and love it. It wouldn't cost you anything other than about an hour of your time to go through their presentation. They have cabins in the woods that we like as well as lodges that are very nice. At The Villages, they have a brand new water park, tennis courts, putt-putt, sand volleyball, horse back riding, grills, a movie studio, game room, pool/hot tub, and more. Feel free to contact me and I can forward your info to them if interested.
Karin,
I want to suggest Wimberley, TX it is about a 3.5 hour drive, maybe 4 from where you live. Wimberley is a charming little town in the hill country just west of San Marcos. There are very affordable place to rent. Just google Cabins, Wimberly, TX or hotels and you will be given lots of options. Not only that but there are plenty of winerys around the area. The views are beautiful and very peaceful. There are several B & B's as well.
If that is too far for you there is always Glenrose, TX and the archaeological digs near there--I'm blanking on the name.
Or Granbury is a cute little getaway place.
But I'm all for the scenery of the Hill Country.
One other thought--Marble Falls is a lovely area and has all the things that you might want. Bev
Either of these towns is a nice getaway for girlfriends and couples that is close by the DFW area.
Glen Rose Texas is a quaint little town with a shopping square and a river for swimming and a picnic. Fossil Rim is nearby and sometimes local small town events are going on.
This link if for the old in on the river (view). It is is immaculate shape, peaceful and very friendly. They have a nice 4 course dinner special on the weekends (reservations a good idea).
Granbury is very near by with a lively town square. There is a breakfast dinner that is fab.
I haven't stayed in Granbury but we visited there on while in Glen Rose. Great town square and also local events. There is a great little breakfast diner there. Yummy and casual.

There is a great b&b in Glenrose. Its located right downtown but it feels like you are in the woods. I would recommend the reworked train car. They have kitchenetts. Good luck
Sometimes the Gaylord Texan runs specials. My hubby and I spent a weekend there and it was so relazing. The food is high. But there is a spa, restaurants, indoor pool. Plus there is a little shop with giant gourmet cookies the size of your head that are reasonably priced and delicious.Have fun!!!
Fredericksburg sounds like exactly what you are looking for. It's a small quaint little town with several cottages/beds & breakfasts. It has a very neat downtown area with little shops, restaurants, etc. Great place to relax for a weekend! Here's the website, which should take you to the info for the different lodging options. http://www.fredericksburg-texas.com/
I have two suggestions where I just love to go. First is New Braunfels, TX between Austin and San Antonio. I leved here for 10 years. It is the off season for tubers on the river so some of their cabins and lodges really cut prices. I booked last year at a lodge on the river on Loop 337 and paid $65 a night for a one room efficiency with fridge, stove and microwave. Go sit out by the river and relax. In town there are antique shops, movie theater, there is a theater group that performs on occasion, restaurants and quaint shops or in Gruene they have Trade days and more restaurants and shops along with a Country Music Hall.
The other suggestion is Hot Springs, Arkansas. I have went there 3 or 4 times just for the weekend stayed at hotels and at a bed & breakfast and just loved this charming town. Lots of shops, tourist places but also went off the beaten path and explored and had a great time. Have a great getaway wherever you choose. Jacki
i'll second the granbury, glenrose, and fredericksburg ideas. they are great. and i'll add that about an hour east of dallas there are several little towns that have cabins for rent. we stayed at this one for part of our honeymoon. www.plumlake.com canton tx is nice and there are several small towns close together for exploring. their trade days are great fun!
I also live in N. Ft Worth and we like to do the same short drive destination. You have a few options within 2 to 3 hours of here.
Glen Rose is about 1 1/2 hrs away... a very quiet, small town and if you decide to venture out, there are daytime activities you may enjoy. We stayed at the Best Western Dinosaur Valley Inn & Suites (non-smoking) and the rates were very reasonable (about $100/nt)depending on when you are staying. Here is a Glen Rose link that may be helpful. www.glenrosearea.com/attractions
And yet another option could be Turner Falls in Davis, OK... about 2 hrs north of here.
Here are a couple links that may be helpful as well. www.davisok.org www.turnerfallspark.com
I would recomend Jefferson Texas. It is 2 1/2 hours east on I-20. They have lovely bed in breakfast there. It is a beautifl small town! Very tranquil! Especially now with spring right around the corner. They have thousands of blue bonnets out that way! Not to mention Caddo Lake. You may want to check that out as well. I know you can rent cabins there! But you have the little guy & the lake - maybe not!
Try to google it!

My husband and I went to Jefferson, TX. It is about 2-3 hrs from Arlington. We stayed at "The Gingerbread House" bed and breakfast. It was wonderful. There is also a resturant across the Caaddo river that was awsome if you like fish. We loved it and will probably go back. The rate on the room was very reasonable too.
Check it out!
Wildcatter Ranch near Graham, TX close to Possum Kingdom Lake. There is a restaurant on site but they have a frig in the rooms and grills are available too. Let them know you are on a budget. They are terrific out there.
I'd suggest Salado, between Waco and Austin due to the distance you requested. However, I believe it's worth the extra drive to go to Fredricksburg instead - between Austin and SanAntonio. SanAntonio would be a great destination due to the Riverwalk also. Have fun!
Look into Gruene, Tx. It is absolutely beautiful. They have several bed & breakfast's to choose from. Its right on the Guadalupe river. They also have several web sites that you can look at.
