How do I fix my bad credit?

I am a single mother of 3 kids and I want to buy a house for us. But I have bad credit. Iv never bought a house before so things like that are not on my credit. My kids are getting big and we are tired of out 2 bedroom apartment. Does anyone know of any way I can get my credit score up so I can buy a house for us?

Without knowing the particulars of your credit, whats on it and how long it's been there that is a hard question to answer.

I would reccommend contacting consumer credit counseling its a free service and I don't know if they can help but they may be able to give you some resources that can. I would caution you against using one of those "we can clean up your credit" services that do so for a fee. Most of these are scams and can cost you alot and possibly do more damage that good.

Good luck to you!

Hello, Amy,
I am a Realtor and I do not recommend that you call consumer credit counseling. That will show up on your credit as a red flag to mortgage lenders. I have the names of two female loan officers that can tell you what you need to do, if you are interested. You can call them and decide which one you want to use. We use them regularly. If they can't help you buy a home right now, they can tell you what to do to get your credit cleaned up and will tell you how long it might be before you could buy a home.
Let me know if I can help,
Melodee

Do NOT use one of those services that offer to clean up your credit for a fee. They don't do anything you couldn't do yourself and they usually are a scam and take your money and run leaving you in a worse position than you were originally.

First of all, I would say it's likely not as bad as you think it is. I know mine wasn't. Your first step would be to get a copy of your credit report from all three bureaus, if you haven't already. You can go to annualcreditreport.com to request a free copy once a year. Then review it carefully and dispute any inaccurate information.

A good place to start is to go to a reputable mortgage lender and try to get pre-qualified for a loan. If you do not qualify, they can tell you what you need to do in order to get to that point.

Good luck!
