Hi Moms! I had my baby 8 weeks ago and had a 2nd degree episiotomy. I had a good checkup at my 6 week postpartum appointment but still have some healing to do. Is it normal to still (at 8 weeks) have some burning when urine touches it? Also, there is some bright red tissue down there. Has anyone had this experience? Still haven't attempted to have sex...a little afraid of pain. Thanks for any advice!
This still falls in the "normal recovery". You may want to try to stay uncovered with no panties during the day when possible (wear a sundress)and especially at night with a towel between your knees, to let more air help with healing.. Did the hospital give you a squirt bottle to squirt on the area while peeing? This is to take away some of the acidity of the urine. The other thing is to dry the area with a cool hair dryer after each potty time and shower.
Before intercourse have your husband do some light massage to help the tissue stretch a little bit. You can also do this when you shower. The intercourse will be fine, just take it a little slower.
What did your Dr. say? I would ask for some of that Epifoam stuff, I loved that stuff. Keep it in the fridge so its cold and put that on after bathroom trips. Make sure your drinking enough water so your pee is not so acid. The older we get the harder to heal. I believe in a lot of natural stuff I would take baths with some lavender oil in the water and bentenite clay (not sure the right spelling. My mom sells it in her shop in Lockhart. The Life Emporium 111 W. San Antonio 512 398-7800, or email me [email protected].
That clay is awesome for so many things! And its cheep, 8oz for like $2.50.)
I have had 3 kids and each one I get an episiotomy so I know the pain you have! Good luck!
Hi... Lansinoh and neosporin help in those nether regions too. It took 3 months for the burning to go away. That squirt bottle is way helpful. Going on 4 months and still not quite back to normal. Take it easy with special time with hubby. Lots of patience on both parts... :). HTH
I know what you are going through...I used Dermoplast spray every time I went to the bathroom it sprays on cool and numbs things up a bit down there (well, after I went), and the squirt bottle (while I was going). I had one spot that took about 10 weeks to heal up...it was a mangled mess of stitches sown there, argh!! The sex will happen and it isn't nearly as bad as you would expect...like everyone else says go slow and get some Astroglide or other type of lube. My OB/GYN said that women postpartum are like in a mini-menopause and need the extra help in the lube department. Congratulations on the new baby.
My sister had an episiotomy go very wrong, and had all of your symptoms. Apparently, they had sliced through the vaginal wall into the peritoneum and intestines. It took three surgeries to correct. I suspect it may have taken much less to correct, but she waited until her son was 9 months old before she started demanding her doctor take her seriously about the pain.
I would insist that the doctor take another look. Another symptom my sister had was going from one bladder infection to another.
You should check with your physician. I had this same problem after the birth of my first child and it turns out that some of the stitches in the middle of the episiotomy had open and not healed, so I had to go for outpatient surgery to have this repaired.
Thanks for all of the advice. I ended up having granulation tissue where the episiotomy was healing. I ended up getting treated with silver nitrate, not fun but I’m feeling much better.
