Hi I'm expecting my second baby in few months and we are having a hard time with girl names. We did not find out the sex of the baby, but have agreed on a boy's name (Eliot). Our first son's name is Charles (Charlie). We like traditonal names, but not ones that are overly common. This is my problem. For girls names, I like names like Olivia, Emily, Madeline, Anna etc.... but they are so common these days. Any suggestions?
I have a friend with a little girl named Elliott--very cute. I also like Piper, Parker and Peyton for a girl.
I like those names too, we choose Lily Anne three years ago. There are a few Lily's out there, but I loved the name too much to not choose it. Go with what you like! Others we considered Kathryn, Jayne, Isabelle, Cassandra (Cassy)... good luck and congrats on baby number two!
Our second daughter is Catherine and we call her Kate. I think it is nice because while Katie is pretty common, Kate is not (you can't even find it on cups/stickers!) It is kind of old fashioned. I saw someone suggested Elliotte for a girl too and though I've never heard of it for a girl, it is totally cute!

I researched your son's names using the voyager to see what sibling names go with them. You seem to like vowels. Charles' sister might be Elizabeth, but Eliot's sister would spell that with an "s". Eliot has more sisters with vowel names: Augustine, Adelaide, Isabella, but Elisabeth is better than any of those IMHO.
Eliot also has a sister Madeleine, which is my personal preferred spelling.
Finally, the one sister name they have in common is Caroline, which is sweet (no pun intended but yes I am a Red Sox fan.)
Seriously that web site is great, have fun. You can find out exactly how common a name has been over the last century, which is very helpful.

I wouldnt worry about the popularity of a name when choosing just pick what you like. I had a little girl 9 months ago and my husband and i thought we were being very original when we chose Addison Nicole but it seems that Addison is not a very uncommon name anymore. We had the same problem when we named our son nearly 2 years ago (his name is Carson) and the first time we took him to the pediatrician he said he had 3 new patients with that name born in the last 2 months. Just pick what you like there will always be more people with that name so its not something I will consider if we have any more children.

We did not want common names, and if it was in the top 200 for any of the past few years, we immediately threw it out of contention.
I also went back historically (to my grandmother's generation, etc) to see what had been popular names.

Here is my thought on naming a boy or girl;
Make sure it fits throughout life. Imagine THAT name on a 3 year old, 33 year old and 53 year old. (I also imagine that name on an office door!!)
I sometimes will come across someone with an adorable child with a real cutsey name...but then I think, "can you imagine having that cutsey name while trying to climb the corporate ladder?"

Well I had some picked out just in case our second was a girl...however we are having a boy and FINALLY picked a name so I know how hard it is :)
Our first is a girl and we named her Ashley (very traditional but always LOVED the name). We also had Brooke, Hailey, Morgan, Aubrey, and Aundrea (Aun-dre-a). My friend thought about Callaby (which is very different but came from her Great Grandmother. Thought that was cute too.

I totally agree with you about not wanting a name that is too popular. I also love some of the traditional girls names, but I can't stand the thought of my daughter growing up thinking her name is Emily B. or whatever because there are 3 other girls with the same name in her class. Abigail has always been one of my favorites, but it is so popular now I won't use it.
I like Adelaide, Celia, Violet, Gloria, Maelle, Lola, and Greta.

I like Lilly, Marley and Ellie. Either one goes with Charlie and I think they are sweet names. I too LOVE LOVE LOVE the name Olivia!
I don't think Olivia is all that popular, and I love it. What about Ella?
My daughters name is Gwenyth Annette which I just love. I wanted a Gwen not a gwynn so I kinda tweeked the spelling a tad due to the fact that I didn't want Gwendolyn. I feel it is a name she can grow into and either keep Gwen or take on Gwenyth as she enters the business world if that is the route she wants to take.
Well since it appears that we are done having babies over here I'll suggest my favorite girl name, Audry. Also like Lucille and love Olivia.
